Pages from my recent work for DC Thomson, the British publisher of Commando comics. Commando has been published ever since 1961 and I’m honoured to have joined the ranks of its artists. The story is called The Claymore, by Robbie MacNiven, and will be published towards the end of 2026. The story spans several hundred years and has me drawing scenes from the Battle of Culloden, the American wars of independence, the Boer war, World War One and World War Two. It’s a challenge I enjoy.
DC Thomson have handed me a second book to illustrate, which is called All Who Live Under The Sky, written by Ian Winterton. This is set in Madagascar in 1942, telling a story about Vichy French soldiers battling the British.
I’m hugely indebted to comic artist Mike Collins (Marvel, DC Comics, 2000AD) for the introduction to DC Thomson which landed me the job. The art is drawn on an iPad, using Apple Pencil and Procreate. I could draw them traditionally, but the iPad allows me to work in cafes or all comfy on a beanbag.
